About the Author

Jancis Robinson's award-winning books Vines, Grapes and Wine (1986) and the hugely successful Oxford Companion to Wine (1994, 1999, 2006), are landmarks in wine literature. Jancis is the Financial Times' wine correspondent and is critically acclaimed as the "woman who makes the wine world gulp when she speaks" (USA Today) and "our favorite wine writer" (Playboy). Jancis was the first person outside the wine trade to qualify as a Master of Wine, in 1984. She was awarded an OBE in 2003 and the Officier de l'Ordre du Mérite Agricole in 2010 by the French Minister of Agriculture.

Hugh Johnson has led the world of wine writing in many new directions over the 40 years since his first book, Wine, was published. The World Atlas of Wine, his Wine Companion (now in its sixth edition), the annual Pocket Wine Book (since 1977), The Story ofWine, and his memoir, A Life Uncorked, have all been best-sellers. Indeed, his Pocket Wine is the
world's best-selling annual wine book. His unique approach, serious and informed, yet entertaining and unpretentious, has earned him the admiration of wine lovers all over the world. In 2007, Hugh was awarded an OBE for services to winemaking.

A beautifully produced, enjoyable and authoritative book

I agree with the chorus of praise for this book. It is beautifully produced and packed with information.

Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson are phenomenally knowledgeable, and they have used that to produce a world-class reference work which is also a pleasure to browse in. It has beautiful, detailed maps and interesting, readable text so that opening a page at random is very enjoyable just for a browse, but there is a lot of proper expertise here with an excellent index and in-depth articles on things like the factors which affect the quality of Bordeaux wines and so on. Each country gets a proper introductory overview and detailed (in some cases like Bordeaux, micro-detailed) analysis of regions, all backed up with excellent maps, pictures of labels and the like.

Truly, anything the non-professional would ever need to know about wine is here, and it's plainly used as a reference by professionals, too. It is, therefore, a very substantial volume at nearly 400 large-format pages, and the only slightly negative thing I have to say about it is that it is heavy enough to be a challenge to the wrists after a very short time - but then extensive reference books have to be weighty, and it's fine to read on a table or your lap. I'm delighted with this book and would warmly recommend it to anyone with an interest in wine at any level: it's crammed with authoritative information and a pleasure to read and to look at.

A not so brief tour of an enormous world of wine

When Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson team up on a book about wine you have high expectations. And they are mostly met here.

The introduction is just that, a quick overview of wine. I love their bluntness: the subtitle to their paragraph on chardonnay reads "Broad, versatile, inoffensive - unless over-oaked".

But this is an atlas, and about 300 pages are devoted to a whirlwind tour of wine around the world. While well done, the top level treatment leaves you realizing just how big the world of wine is today. They could have written ten times as many pages, and still not covered everything going on in wine today.

So take this as an overview. Nearly any region of interest has books--often many, many books--devoted to it. But most people can't spend all their time reading about wine, and this book provides a good overview for deciding where you want to focus on.

This book answers all wine questions, even if you are a novice. I already have an earlier version, but wanted the updated information about the latest areas and newest maps of wine producing regions from around the world.
Hugh and Janice are the best. Anyone who wants to LEARN more about wine has to have this book.

Filled with lots of tips

This 128-page paperback features a wealth of drawing tips, techniques and wonderful sketches.

By the way, this book is published three publishers, Page One, Search Press and Barron's Educational Series. Cover art is different but content is the same.

There are tips on styles and approaches with a mix from both observational drawing and also understanding of the human figure structure. There are lots of ideas on what you can draw, where you can draw and how to draw.

If you're only sketching people, it can appear monotonous. Well, there are many tips on how you can keep your drawings fresh, such as using different drawing medium, playing with composition or just by looking at the many illustrated examples by artists all over the world. Lynne Chapman's personal sketches are delightful too.

There's also a section on how to draw outside in the public, where to look for interesting people to draw and how to react when people come up to look at what you're drawing. Lynne has also included interesting stories from her own experiences when sketching outdoors.

If you've ever found sketching people to be difficult and not sure where to start, this is a great book to get. Be sure to check out Lynne Chapman's blog too.

Inspirational, gorgeous, excellent!

I own probably every 'Urban Sketching' book published in the last 10 years or so - and this one has shot right up to my top three!

Even though I rarely sketch people at the moment, this book has me pulling out my art supplies and starting to play with them. Not just to sketch more people; most of the principles and ideas also work great for animals, objects, landscapes, buildings etc.
There is great and detailed advice on how to tackle faces, hands, bodies, gestures, movement etc, but also on colours, depth, background, composition etc - and all of it in an easy, relaxed tone that makes it a pleasure to read.

I love the playfulness and enthousiasm and style of the illustrations SO much! They are full of life and every page is filled to the brim with gorgeous artwork (but NOT the intimidatingly gorgeous kind!) and comments and remarks and tips that have already taught me a lot.

Lynn Chapman's own work is terrific, and the choice of other artist's work is varied and beautiful.
The whole thing just makes you want to grab something and draw, sketch, paint!

If you buy any sketching book this year, make it this one - heck, if you buy any kind of book this year, make it this one.

I've just finished reading it (I tried to make it last, really soak up every page) and I've gone right back to the beginning to go through it again, which I have never done before with any book.
Oh, and it has also sent me on a mad hunt for a Koh i Noor 'Magic' Rainbow pencil... ;-)

The UK edition (I'm in Europe) came out a little bit earlier than the US edition, but the contents are the same.

Great tutorial to breathe life into your urban sketches

I love urban sketching. I'm just a beginner and feel overwhelmed at the prospect of adding people to those sketches. But no urban seeing is complete without people. This book provides excellent instruction in sketching people as they live and work.

Festooned with more than 1,300 photographs, posters and documents (many in color), the weighty (6.6 lbs.) volume offers the Beatles' "own permanent written record of events up to 1970," some of it previously published, but much of it transcribed from new or unpublished interviews. Paul, George, Ringo and Beatles-related folks (Brian Epstein, George Martin, Derek Taylor) contribute text from interviews conducted for the book and for an accompanying TV program. Words from the late John Lennon have been gathered from print, broadcast and manuscripts (each with an indicated date), then spliced together to create coherent pages and paragraphs. What should be the final word on the Beatles has arrived. It takes the form of a massive oral-history tome, its contents derived mostly from recorded conversations with Paul, George, and Ringo for the recent TV documentary The Beatles Anthology. Those are augmented by excerpts from interviews with John that are integrated effectively and almost seamlessly with the new material, and by occasional comments from the group's closest associates, such as recording producer George Martin. Big as it is, the volume virtually overflows with fascinating tidbits about growing up in Liverpool, early gigs, the rise to unprecedented fame and acclaim, and the Beatles' pervasive social influence. It seems crammed much in the way that the Beatles crammed several lifetimes' worth of music and living into the decade of the group's existence. Although the contents are somewhat sanitized--this is, after all, essentially a group autobiography--the four address less-pleasant incidents, such as the sacking of original Beatles drummer Pete Best and the petty squabbles that led to the group's 1970 breakup. The text is accompanied by more than 1,300 photos, many letters, and other memorabilia. There isn't much news, though. After 30 years and hundreds of books, few secrets remain to be revealed. But even familiar bits of Beatle lore seem fresh when told in the band's own words. Timeless, a treasure behind every page

Having being born after The Beatles broke up my discovery of the band's work occurred progressively in my high school years, as I got exposed to the bulk of their work and exploded when I got to College and first listened to the last leg of their recordings (after Sgt. Pepper). This alone would suffice for anyone to have enough respect for their music, however the Anthology book opened up a whole new dimension that was unfamiliar to me.
Going chronologically from their beginnings, the book is structured year by year, intercalating comments by each of them (George Martin, the fifth Beatle included, as well as several other people involved with them), flowing in a way that feels as if you were sitting with them in your living room, sipping a cup of tea (or coffee, if you prefer) while listening to the fab four talk about their lives while they were together. This effect is so impeccable that it's what I love most about the book.
Now, that's obviously not all. The 368 pages of the book (yes, it has 368, and the last one is a very Lennon-like "handwritten" statement saying "By hook or by crook I'll be last in this book -John Lennon") are beautifully packaged along with tons of pictures, copies of letters, posters, etc. that complement magnificently the already outstanding document that the "chat" between them represents.
Three years after its release it remains an awesome gift and an endless source of information. I am sure it will remain that way for a very long time.

About the Author

Betsy Beyer is a Technical Writer for Google in New York City specializing in Site Reliability Engineering. She has previously written documentation for Google’s Data Center and Hardware Operations Teams in Mountain View and across its globally distributed datacenters. Before moving to New York, Betsy was a lecturer on technical writing at Stanford University. En route to her current career, Betsy studied International Relations and English Literature, and holds degrees from Stanford and Tulane.

Chris Jones is a Site Reliability Engineer for Google App Engine, a cloud platform-as-a-service product serving over 28 billion requests per day. Based in San Francisco, he has previously been responsible for the care and feeding of Google’s advertising statistics, data warehousing, and customer support systems. In other lives, Chris has worked in academic IT, analyzed data for political campaigns, and engaged in some light BSD kernel hacking, picking up degrees in Computer Engineering, Economics, and Technology Policy along the way. He’s also a licensed professional engineer.

Jennifer Petoff is a Program Manager for Google’s Site Reliability Engineering team and based in Dublin, Ireland. She has managed large global projects across wide-ranging domains including scientific research, engineering, human resources, and advertising operations. Jennifer joined Google after spending eight years in the chemical industry. She holds a PhD in Chemistry from Stanford University and a BS in Chemistry and a BA in Psychology from the University of Rochester.

Niall Murphy leads the Ads Site Reliability Engineering team at Google Ireland. He has been involved in the Internet industry for about 20 years, and is currently chairperson of INEX, Ireland’s peering hub. He is the author or coauthor of a number of technical papers and/or books, including "IPv6 Network Administration" for O’Reilly, and a number of RFCs. He is currently cowriting a history of the Internet in Ireland, and is the holder of degrees in Computer Science, Mathematics, and Poetry Studies, which is surely some kind of mistake. He lives in Dublin with his wife and two sons.

The book felt a lot like an intro to Google

First, this book is a collection of writings by different authors, none of which is listed on the cover. The cover lists the editors, none of which actually wrote the text in the book. The chapters flow well enough, but it's distracting being reminded constantly who "edited" one chapter to the next. That's such a minor role.

The book felt a lot like an intro to Google, by which I mean if you were thinking about joining Google or were a new hire, you would be handed this book. There are some general concepts that apply world wide, but a lot of the text is spent introducing different Google-only projects. They could have just referred to projects by the types of solutions they are, or mention the open-source industry standard versions of the tools, but instead, it's a lot of internal project names with a classic Google approach of ignoring everything that's not-google.

Ultimately, I didn't gain any new insights from the book.

Used most of a highlighter on this book...

The really liked this book. Cool to see how Google actually runs things at their scale. Got me thinking about things I never thought about when it comes to my work in tech. This could sound like the book makes you paranoid, but I think that's too negative. I felt more like I now have a little license and education on how things can (and will) fail and how I can better prepare for and mitigate them. It's like you got to do a ride along in a busy Ambulance service, gets you thinking "hmm, maybe I should take that CPR course and brush up on the heimlich maneuver...".

Even though several of the topics covered weren't things I deal with day to day, I think the mindset you develop after seeing how they solve various issues applies to most any IT / tech endeavor (i.e. whether you're in ops, a SWE, etc.). I think if this book's subject interests you at all, you'll really appreciate having read it.

it's alright

This is more of a best practice and general guide book on site reliability engineering/devops. While it covers a range of topics, don't look for any low level details on implementation or you'll be sorely disappointed.

Considering that this book comes from google, I'm actually disappointed with the quality of the book; I really expected much more on implementation details. The average Unix sys admin books will give you more than what this book offers.

If you're a manager, you'll like this book. If you're engineer, you may or may not like this book.

What a fine book. A fun read,I almost ate it UP. What I was so impressed by, is that I was able to read it and understand this scholarly subject matter. That is absolutely a testament to Ms.Yglesias's writing (style). A subject about which I know almost nothing and I felt right at home. The glossary fabuloso!
The personal but not sticky or sentimental approach to the man himself admirable.
Know next to nothing about American homes and their history? No problem. It is all here.

After working in the field with Caren and seeing her vision come to life, having her book was icing on the Cake. Seven years ago when I met Caren, she was talking about writing this and I am sure there are a lot of people glad to see it come out. If you like Sara Susanka, you'll love this.

About the Author

James C. Gerdeen, Ph.D., P.E., is a professor emeritus at the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Science Center and a distinguished professor at Michigan Technological University. He has published over 65 papers and over 100 research reports. His research interests include pressure vessel design, structural analysis, metal working manufacturing, and mechanical design.

Ronald A.L. Rorrer, Ph.D., P.E., is an associate professor at the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center. He has published over 30 papers and holds one patent. His research areas include tribology, polymers, composites, and bioengineering.

    Unfortunately this is not the bible of wholesaling. Lots of generalities and very little, or any, specifics. Example: When Than writes about mailing lists to use in your direct mail campaigns he never tells us where to secure these lists. And so it goes throughout the book. For $18 is a skip. Where do I get a refund?
