Great collection

This book is a great collection of horror fiction. I was looking for great horror to read in this month of macabre,and when I heard about this book, I jumped at the chance andaimmediately bought it. It was one of the better decisions I have made lately. All the stories are very well written, and all of them convey a sence of dread and paranoia for the unknown, but this book is diffinitley not meant for kids. Also, if you aren't a true horror fanot, then you may as well close this book now.

A good action is one that constitutes its agent as the autonomous and efficacious cause of her own movements. These properties correspond, respectively, to Kant's two imperatives of practical reason. Conformity to the categorical imperative renders us autonomous, and conformity to the hypothetical imperative renders us efficacious. And in determining what effects we will have in the world, we are at the same time determining our own identities. Korsgaard develops a theory of action and of interaction, and of the form interaction must take if we are to have the integrity that, she argues, is essential for agency. On the basis of that theory, she argues that only morally good action can serve the function of action, which is self-constitution.

About the Author

Christine M. Korsgaard earned her B.A. at the University of Illinois in 1974, her Ph.D. at Harvard University, where she studied with John Rawls, in 1981, and an LHD at the University of Illinois in 2004. She is currently Arthur Kingsley Porter Professor of Philosophy at Harvard University. She works on moral philosophy and its history, practical reason, agency, personal identity, and the relations between human beings and the other animals.

Beautifully written and miraculously lucid exposition of Kantian rationalism

Korsgaard is to my mind (though not mine alone) the world's greatest living expositor of the Kantian ethical tradition. This book wipes away, in effortless prose, many of the misconceptions about Kant that his own difficult, often obscure language helped to create. Korsgaard tackles most of the criticisms of Kant that people muster when rejecting his ideas: his rigorism, his denial of self-interest, his subordination of pleasure, the emptiness of his formalism, his sacralization of reason. While sensitive to why these criticisms have occurred to so many people, Korsgaard demonstrates in careful step-by-step explication of Kant's dominant concerns--self-constitution, the commitment to freedom, and the inseparability of these ideas--how thoroughly beside the point most anti-Kantian objections have been. I should know; as a diehard, lifelong utilitarian with a stiff empiricist spine, I have always found Kant a "turnoff." Korsgaard's book persuades me that my long-held views of Kant have been deeply mistaken. In that regard (a small regard, but not an insignificant one), it has been genuinely life-changing.

You can read this. It is not encumbered with asides about who thinks her arguments miss somehow; she just makes her case following --as she thinks--Kant and Aristotle. Strong presentation which is not afraid to address problems. Very good book.

Grade 7-12-Roald Dahl was Going Solo (Puffin, 1999) when he left England to work for the Shell Oil Company in East Africa. In this sequel to his earlier autobiography, Boy (Dec. 2002, p. 71), the author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory details his adventures in Africa and later as an RAF pilot during World War II. Dahl is occasionally tongue-in-cheek as he recalls a few highly dangerous snakes and an inordinately gentle lion during his travels around the African countryside. When war was declared, Dahl helped to round up German ex-patriots, and then he went off to a desert outpost to learn how to fly fighter planes. His wartime experiences in North Africa, Greece, and the Middle East included suffering a serious head injury in a plane crash and shooting down enemy planes. His descriptions of war are occasionally horrific, but there are also frequent injections of ironic humor. Though the thoroughly British pronunciation of some words may be unfamiliar to American listeners, Derek Jacobi's narration is well paced and splendidly balances the comic and serious elements of this memoir. The sound quality is good and, despite the fact that the cardboard case will not circulate well, both it and the cassettes provide useful information. This recording's straightforward recounting of war will appeal to Roald Dahl fans and World War II air buffs, and is most suitable for upper middle school and high school audiences.

In this book, Dahl (author of Kiss, Kiss and popular children's books such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) continues the autobiography he began in Boy. Here he offers his impressions of Tanzania, where he sailed to work for the Shell Oil Company in 1938. At the outbreak of World War II, he volunteered for the RAF and trained as a fighter pilot. Posted to his squadron in Greece, Dahl was chagrined to learn he was one of only 14 pilots who made up the RAF in that theater. It's a pity there isn't a sequel to this one.

In this sequel to Boy, Roald Dahl writes about his life as a young adult. After leaving Repton, his boarding school, he signed on with the Shell Oil Company and was sent to East Africa, which is now called Tanzania. While Dahl was serving in Tanzania, World War II happened and he signed up with the Royal Air Force. He chronicles in detail his work for Shell, and his experiences as an RAF pilot.
In East Africa, Roald Dahl had a near-fatal encounter with a deadly black mamba, whose poison can kill you in about two seconds. Right after the war broke out Roald's servant, a descendant of warrior tribesman, decided to become a warrior himself and killed a civillian. Roald had to spirit him away before the murder was discovered. And just to show how dangerous flying with the RAF was, one day when Roald returned from a mission his tent-mate told him, "I boiled enough tea for two, just in case you happened to come back." He was eventually shot down, but survived. While recuperating in the hospital, he fell in love with his nurse.
Going Solo was, like all of Dahl's books, wonderful. I only wish he'd have written a third about his later adulthood. Pity he died before he could do that.

Going Solo (the sequel to Boy) is a collection of Roald Dahl's most interesting stories of his time in Africa. These include: meeting a man you gives himself dandruff, teaching an African boy to read and write, seeing a lion attack a cook, learning to fly without a teacher, crashing in the African desert, leading a unit of R.A.F. soldiers to stop a caravan of German people from leaving Dar es Salaam, becoming temporarily blind, meeting the girl of his dreams then falling out of love when he sees her and living on a Greek airfield soon before he was grounded. Roald Dahl's style of writing changes each time slightly changes to fit the story. Basically, you get the idea that you have known Roald for years and he is just telling you an amusing story. Going Solo was not as interesting as some of his other fiction stories. For some readers it may not be interesting enough to keep you in the book; but it is not boring, thrills and adventure are always happening. To compare this to Boy would be a little difficult because even though they are the same writer, Boy is about his childhood and is for younger readers. Going Solo is probably for older readers. Even it you do not like one of the chapters the next will bring you back in. So if you want a lot of good anecdotes to read then or if you really liked Boy, you should pick up Going Solo.

Very interesting book about roald dahls book

As a 17 year old boy who spent my childhood in Norway, with roalds books, I was really surprised when I found at that he wrote books for adults as well. This is the kind of book which it is hard to put down when youre reading, but unfortunately after sitting for hours in my stressless I was out of pages. This book continues the story begun in boy, where dahl tells us about his highlights in life, from the point where he worked for Shell until he has finished his service in the RAF, and he returns back to a war raged Brittain . I would just wish that roald had written more about his life because I found it very entertaining

Wang Shaoqiang is a professor at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, where he is dean of the design, visualization and animation department. teen age killers

Interesting stories about females who were in their teens when they murdered someone. Most interesting are the details of where they are today. Some are still in prison, some have been released and are living under new names. Some of these girls gave reasons that were absolutely chilling. "I hate Mondays" is one reason. Really? No remorse for this one. I'd recommend it.

Unexpected easy reading that kept me wanting more

I love mysteries so I just took a chance and I am glad I did. I can't wait to read all of these the rest of these reasonably priced and well written short true crime stories now. I'm hooked!!!

Needs a good editor

Pretty straightforward, and one case to me is especially shocking because I feel as though the perpetrator not only got away with something horrific, but is now being rewarded. It is a good thing, I suppose, when a young offender gets out and does well. It is not good when said offender seems to exhibit no remorse and views her "outing" as an inconvenience instead of something for which to apologize. The bad side of this book is that the writing is pretty sloppy. There were numerous mistakes that even a cursory glance by an editor should have uncovered. Did I get the digital copy of the galley proofs, or something?
