Valuable New information for Mediators

This newly revised edition of The Promise of Mediation offers a wealth of new information on the priniciples of transformative conflict intervention. Many readers may not be aware that the revised edition actually contains almost entirely new material, reflecting new understandings of transformative mediation that have developed since the publication of the first edition. Bush and Folger offer new specifics for practice in the transformative framework of mediation through a carefully analyzed case study, in which we can see details of the "small steps" of conflict transformation. They also discuss the impact that the transformative movement has had on the field as a whole, and debunk some common misconceptions about the transformative framework. I have especially enjoyed the last chapter, which addresses, more completely than anything in the first edition, the deep underlying values that have led to the articulation of a transformative vision for mediation, and looks at possibilities for the future of the field.

This is definitely a book I would recommend to anyone interested in mediation, conflict, or just the interaction of human beings.

A Huge Step Forward in the Art and Science of Mediation

I'm grateful to the authors for the significant advance in mediation thinking that this book represents. This new edition has the potential to move the entire field toward a deeper, more powerful understanding. With the original edition, and again with this one, Bush and Folger have provided great clarity to a topic that, until now, has been muddled. While other mediators and writers succumb to the pressures of conflict and become part of the problem, these authors instruct us on how to remain true to the most important principles that lead to deep healing of human conflict. If I had the need, I would only hire a mediator who had read, studied, understood and embraced this book.

A Worthwhile Sequel

This is the follow-up to the authors' watershed first edition of the book by the same name, and contrary to the fate of most sequels, this one's really worthwhile. Indeed, it's largely a new book, rather than a mere revision; it fully updates the reader on the journey and developments in "transformative mediation" over the decade since the authors' first book with the same title was published in 1995. For anyone with an interest in the transformative model of mediation (as contrasted with, for example, facilitative or evaluative mediation), this is the best, most comprehensive, and well-written volume available.

Just skims the surface...but not in a good way

I used this book to teach a graduate, professional course on Organizational Change on the recommendation of a colleague. Its key strength is that it is concise and therefore a good choice for working students without much time to spend on a full-length textbook. However, the advantages end with the short length; the book skims over so much material that could be of great utility in the interest of brevity, and it is missing a surprising number of key ideas and perspectives that are present in most other organizational change textbooks.

Consequently, in some respects I have trouble figuring out the intended audience for the book. Although the length and tone suggests that the intended audience is managers and professional students, many of the points that it raises are fairly "common sense" issues for someone with management experience, and the bold-faced terms that it emphasizes are oftentimes simplistic or common bits of jargon. My non-traditional graduate students didn't seem to get much out of it. I read a negative review posted by an MBA professor, but while his opinion would be accurate at a Master's level, it is not valid at the Bachelor's level. Five classes away from my Bachelor's in Organizational Management, Spector's book was a breath of fresh air after all the theory I've been reading for the past year. I recognized the theories in use, from leadership to communication to adult development, but found the vocabulary and the examples to be highly useful. This is not a cookbook, but it is a great introduction into how one might apply the many theories with which we have been bombarded. Underclassmen will appreciate this text, and hopefully, so will their professors.

Spencer A. Rathus received his Ph.D. from the University at Albany and is on the faculty of The College of New Jersey. Some flaws in formatting makes this book difficult to use

I'm really glad this was free with my Kindle Unlimited as I would have been disappointed if I had purchased it. First off, the author writes like English is not his first language or else the book was very poorly edited. This makes following and understanding some of his instructions a bit of a challenge. Secondly, I wish this had actually been split into two different books. Right now the first half of the book includes recipes for a traditional stove top pressure cooker and the second half has recipes specific to the Instant Pot. With the Kindle format, this makes the table of contents very cumbersome as you have to scroll through 250 recipes before reaching the section for Instant Pot.

I'm sure I will try some of the recipes but when I have to return a "borrowed" book before I can get something new from Kindle Unlimited, this will be the first to go.

I have purchased other cookbooks from Jamie Stewart. I was not disappointed with Top 500 Pressure Cooker and Instant Pot. I had received an Instant Pot for the holidays and had not been using it to its full use. After reading and going over the items in the book, I have gone out and purchased the things I need to try some of the great looking recipes. I would recommend this book to anyone that is looking to have a good reference book or cookbook for their Pressure Cooker.

Great Cookbook!

I have been looking for a pressure cooker cookbook recently and I came across this one. I think it’s great! I like a lot of the recipes and I’m pretty excited to try them out. One problem I seem to have with other books is that some of the ingredients are not very common in other recipes I use but that is not the case here. There are a lot of useful tips in the book and they come in handy, especially if you do not have a lot of experience with a pressure cooker. It goes above and beyond, I highly recommend it!

Fun way to learn and review grammar skills for junior high

This book is a great tool for teaching and reviewing grammar skills at the junior high level. A story unfolds, one sentence a day, and provides needed repetition of basic grammar skills. I use it as the sponge lesson each day at the beginning of my classes. The book also contains quizzes and writing lessons. The kids love it; they are honing their grammar skills, and they race to be "first" because that person gets to write the correct sentence on the overhead! It's amazing what a little competition can do! I teach in Texas with a state-mandated skills test hanging over us every year, and I'm convinced it has helped our 7th and 8th master the writing portion of the exam.

Works with High School Students, too

As a high school teacher, I thought that my subject area, English, meant teaching literature and working on developing mastery in writing. When I discovered that many of my students had trouble putting together complete sentences, I knew that I had to do something to reinforce grammar skills, but I dreaded worksheets, etc. When I found Kiester's book I decided to give it a try. The beauty is that this approach works with all levels of students and can be tailored to focus on your class' needs. I loved the results--especially seeing the vocabualry appear in their papers. I recommend this for any teacher who struggles with basic grammar and punctuation at a high school level.

Caught'Ya!: Grammar With a Giggle

Before I found Jane Bell Kiester's books, I didn't have a clear path to follow when teaching writing. The Caught'Ya books solve the problem of teaching your students grammar and mechanics. Each day students are given a sentence that adds to a story line appropriate for their age group. Students become engaged in the learning process throughout the story and often can't wait to see what happens next. Students become intimately involved in the story as they become part of the story when the teacher inserts their name as a character in the story. Although Caught'Ya's are integral to the teaching of grammar and mechanics, the greatest bonus I found in using these wonderful sentences was the fact that students naturally and easily learn to paragraph appropriately. This is a difficult task to teach and for students to understand. Caught'Ya's solve this for teachers and students alike. If you can't purchase any other resource this year, you must purchase one of Jane Bell Kiester's Caught'Ya books! Your students will learn to write in a way that will improve all test scores! Do not hesitate! This is the perfect purchase.
