Mrs. Hemingway: A Novel, by Naomi Wood

The Paris Wife was only the beginning of the story . . .
A New York Times Book Review Editor's Choice
A Richard & Judy UK Pick

Paula McLain’s New York Times–bestselling novel piqued readers’ interest about Ernest Hemingway’s romantic life. But Hadley was only one of four women married, in turn, to the legendary writer. Just as T.C. Boyle’s bestseller The Women completed the picture begun by Nancy Horan’s Loving Frank, Naomi Wood’s Mrs. Hemingway tells the story of how it was to love, and be loved by, the most famous and dashing writer of his generation. Hadley, Pauline, Martha and Mary: each Mrs. Hemingway thought their love would last forever; each one was wrong.

Told in four parts and based on real love letters and telegrams, Mrs. Hemingway reveals the explosive love triangles that wrecked each of Hemingway's marriages. Spanning 1920s bohemian Paris through 1960s Cold War America, populated with members of the fabled "Lost Generation," Mrs. Heminway is a riveting tale of passion, love, and heartbreak.

From Booklist
In their own ways and in their own times, Hadley, Pauline, Martha, and Mary all loved Ernest Hemingway. All experienced the passionate days of early courtship, the midsummer lethargy, the chipped-ice daiquiris that became acceptable earlier and earlier in the day. They all knew the sting of betrayal as his notoriously wandering eye eventually turned to another woman, and they all knew the safety of his embrace. They knew how to weather the tides of his creativity, how to support and nourish and heal and mend. While Hemingway’s stories are known worldwide, Wood used copious love letters, diaries, and telegrams to flesh out the stories that these women might have told. Flitting from bohemian 1920s Paris to sunny Havana, from Paris in the days of WWII to 1960s America, Mrs. Hemingway spans eras. Wood’s research gives this passionate story a firm foundation, and readers who enjoyed Loving Frank (2007) and The Paris Wife (2011) will adore this ideal summer read. Seamlessly blending known facts with fiction, Mrs. Hemingway is an absorbing, tender glimpse inside the lives of those in Hemingway’s inner circle. --Stephanie Turza

“Magnetic… assembles a satisfying puzzle of personalities, bringing each relationship’s beginning, end and overlap into vivid focus.”
—Leisl Schillinger, The New York Times Book Review

“[A] compelling fictionalization of Ernest Hemingway’s four marriages. . . . We see [the women] interacting, often even liking each other -- but the frustrations and heartbreaks are just as present, giving ‘Mrs. Hemingway’ a frisson of constant conflict . . . It’s a heady time, and Wood nails it.”
— The Boston Globe

I just want more!
By Moocows1220
After reading "The Paris Wife," it lead me to wanting more on the twisted life of Hemingway. Naomi Wood does a nice job of briefly covering each wife and their time with Mr. Hemmingway. I would not say that it goes into great depth as to what these wives truly experienced while they were with him, but enough to get an idea. Since "The Paris Wife" had only covered one wife, I wanted to know more about the others that came after Hadley. As sick as it may be, I wanted to see Pfeif hurt, as well as Hemingway heartbroken when Martha said she was done(even though it was probably only for about an hour). Like I said, I feel like I need to keep reading other books to really "satisfy" the in depth story I am looking for, but this was a great, quick read.

Naomi Wood is amazing
By Naomi Wood
I loved it! The charcters have a lot of depth, and I felt like I could empathize with each place the wives found themselves in. I wanted to read this because I share the authors name, and I am so pleased she wrote with heart, clarity, and depth.
